What's New For the 2019 Nissan Frontier?

For the 2019 model year, the Frontier-which is Nissan's compact pickup truck-gets a few changes as it continues with its third production cycle. A 7-inch touchscreen replaces the 5-inch color display and 5.8-inch touchscreen on the previous model year, and the truck gets a third bodystyle: the Crew Cab Long Bed.

What are the Available Trims and Features for 2019?

Five trims are available on the 2019 Nissan Frontier: the S, SV, Desert Runner, PRO-4X, and SL. There's also the Midnight Edition, which is a variant that is unique with its 18-inch black alloy wheels, black front grille and step rails, and black "Midnight Edition" badging. You can choose between the two-door King Cab, which seats up to four people; and the four-door Crew Cab and Crew Cab Long Bed, which seats up to five. (The King Cab and Crew Cab have a "short bed.") Standard features on the Frontier truck include cruise control, a rearview camera, Bluetooth wireless connectivity for hands-free phone operation and audio streaming, hands-free text messaging ability, a four-speaker audio system, Siri Eyes Free for virtual assistance, a USB port and an audio jack for connecting mobile devices, and the aforementioned 7-inch color touchscreen.

Remote keyless entry is added on the SV and higher. At the Desert Runner trim level, Nissan provides six speakers instead of four. Also introduced on the Desert Runner are 8-way driver-side manual adjustability and white contrast interior stitching, which are also present on the PRO-4x. At the Midnight Edition trim level, there's also a leather wrapping on the steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and front-seat heating. The PRO-4X is enhanced with a Rockford Fosgate-powered 10-speaker audio system (instead of the four- or six-speaker setup), a single-disc CD player with WMA and MP3 playback capability, a navigation system, NissanConnect mobile apps for remote-controlling infotainment features, and a three-month trial subscription to SiriusXM Radio. Only the SL has leather upholstery, 4-way power adjustability on the passenger seat, and a universal transceiver for remote-controlling home features such as garage doors and security systems.

Nissan Frontier Performance

On the 2019 Nissan Frontier, the S and SV trims are powered by a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, which generates 152 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque. The other trims get a larger and more powerful 4.0-liter V6, which generates 261 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. Depending on the trim combination, the engine is mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission, 5-speed manual transmission, or 6-speed manual transmission. Except for the appropriately named four-wheel-drive PRO-4X, Frontier trims provide the opportunity to choose between a rear-wheel-drive system and a four-wheel drivetrain.

Safety Features in the Forefront for 2019

For cushioning and restraint in the event of a collision, the 2019 Nissan Frontier comes with dual front impact airbags, dual seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and a pair of roof-mounted side curtains. Also standard on the pickup truck are a rearview camera, electronic vehicle stability control, traction control, all-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, and electronic brake-force distribution. If you choose four-wheel drive and an automatic transmission, Nissan add hill start assist and hill descent control. Upgrading to the SV trim adds engine immobilization as a security mechanism. A rear sonar system and a full-fledged theft-deterrent system appear if you go with, at the very least, the Midnight Edition. And on the PRO-4X and SL, Nissan adds a first-aid kit.
