There’s no reason to stay inside all winter just because the weather is frosty. Instead, take part in activities you can only do one season of the year, when the snow falls over central Illinois. Macon County Conservation District is hosting several fun events this January that’ll give you an opportunity to go out and play in the snow. Check out three of their upcoming events below.
Warm Up & Burn Calories Cross Country Skiing
On Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, and other succeeding dates, cross country skiing workshops are held for only $12 a person, which covers the cost of instruction, poles, skis and boots. Cross country skiing is not only a great way to fit in workouts during winter, but also a unique way to get out and explore wildlife and the outdoors.
Compete in a Snowman Building Contest
If you think you’ve got the skills to sculpt a creative snowman, join the Snowman Building Competition at Rock Springs Nature Center on Saturday, Jan. 24. A fun prize will be awarded to the winner and free hot chocolate will be provided to all those who attend.
Guided Observational Hike
On Sunday, Jan. 25, head out on a free guided trail hike, where you’ll be asked to put your observational skills to the test by spotting objects that don’t belong in the great outdoors. This is an excellent event for families with small children or anyone who wants to practice their detective skills while enjoying an outdoor hike.
