More Nissan Leafs have been sold worldwide than any other electric vehicle, proving the EV’s popularity among consumers. So what would make the prom king of the alternative vehicle segment even more attractive? The answer to that is easy: greater range. And apparently that’s what Nissan plans to give us.

In the near future, several sources say the Nissan Leaf is going to offer double its current range, which stands at an EPA-estimated 84 miles. When Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn made an appearance on a Japanese television program, he confirmed that the company has been working on a new battery and that it will help boost the Leaf’s range significantly.

In addition, an anonymous Nissan engineer disclosed news that Leaf could offer up to a 249 mile range in a few years. While this number is likely based on a European mileage figure, U.S. shoppers should still expect a huge leap in efficiency that will be at least double. Additionally, sources also say the new battery is going to be lighter and cheaper to make than the current Leaf battery.

That’s about all Nissan has revealed for now. We’re excited to hear more details and will of course keep you all in the loop as new information surfaces!
