Spring is in the air in Decatur. And with the warmer weather upon us, it’s time to get outside and enjoy some of the great outdoor attractions in and around our beautiful city. One such place that is perfect for the whole family is the Sand Creek Conservation Area.

Mostly known for its outstanding hiking and horse trails that wind through a lush forest, open prairie and floodplain, Sand Creek highlights the beautiful landscape of Macon County. For starters, the horse trail is absolutely breathtaking with its rolling hills. Stretching 7.6 miles through a variety of habitats, you will be in awe at the beauty of this terrific trail.
Walk in Abraham Lincoln’s footsteps as you make your way through the historic Springfield Road. Established in the early 1800s, Abraham Lincoln, his wife, Mary Lincoln, and their children traveled this road in 1830, when coming to Decatur from Indiana. Many travelers moving west also used this road in the 1840s and 1850s.
If you’re not interested in hiking or horseback riding, not to worry. The area really has something for everyone. It offers 18 picnic tables and grills, so you, your friends and family can head down and enjoy a cookout or simple picnic amongst the serene scenery that can be found at this must-see Decatur attraction.
