Do you notice anything unusual or different about the image to the left? If not, look again and scan it carefully. While the image may resemble a typical scene, one you probably experience every day when commuting, it actually reflects a huge innovation in rearview-mirror technology.

For anyone who's ever wanted a rearview mirror that offers greater rearward visibility, you are not alone. Many customers have reached out to Nissan asking for just such an improvement and now their wishes have been fulfilled. The new Smart Rearview Mirror, which was recently debuted at the New York International Auto Show, is an industry first, offering an LCD monitor that enables drivers to see more clearly behind the vehicle.

The device is connected to a rear-mounted camera and, with a simple flick of the switch, allows drivers to access live video footage of the area behind their cars. Using the mirror's "Smart" camera-assisted feature means your view won't be obstructed by headrests, people's heads or your car's B- and C-pillars, along with anything else that could get in the way. Nissan also states that the new Smart Rearview Mirror works incredibly well no matter the lighting situation or weather conditions, so day, night, sunny or rainy, you'll have a clear image of what's behind your car. Check out the video above to see it in action.
